Partner Derek Darby Speaks to Austin American Statesman about City’s Proposed Master Plan

Friday, 25 February 2011

[AUSTIN, TX]—In January, the Texas Facilities Commission voted on whether to approve a new Capitol complex master plan that would mix the city’s government and private enterprises. The plan, which involves the private sector developing the Capitol complex from 11th Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, proposes to build new government buildings on land the state already owns. The plan offers to move state employees out of currently leased space around Austin to provide a cash flow to construct as many as three state office buildings in the complex.

Developers would be invited to participate with regard to construction of the new state buildings, or offer ideas for commerce in the areas that currently house parking lots and garages. “I think it’s an exciting vision for Texas,” said Darby, who has served on the Texas Facilities Commission since 2008. “I applaud the staff for thinking outside the box.” If approved, the ground breaking might not be for several years; however, the plan is based on the fact that 70 percent of the state’s leases will expire over the next six years.

Derek was nominated and then reappointed for the Texas Facilities Commission in 2009, following a confirmation by the Senate which affirmed him for a six year term. He is part of a seven member committee that oversees all state owned real estate as well as, but not limited to, planning, construction, and design of state buildings on that land.
